How to Choose a Wedding Dress Silhouette

May 8, 2026 · 5 min

“Silhouette” just means the overall shape of the gown. Knowing the basics makes shopping easier — and helps you tell your stylist what you’re drawn to. Here are the main ones.

A-line

Fitted through the bodice, then flowing gently outward like the letter “A.” Universally flattering and comfortable — a great place to start if you’re unsure.

Ball gown

A fitted bodice with a dramatic, full skirt. The classic fairytale look, ideal if you want a true “wow” moment walking down the aisle.

Mermaid & fit-and-flare

Contoured through the body and flaring near the knee (mermaid) or a touch higher and softer (fit-and-flare). Both highlight your shape; fit-and-flare is a little easier to move in.

Sheath & column

A slim, straight line from top to bottom. Effortless and modern — beautiful for relaxed, outdoor, or destination weddings.

Fabric & details

Beyond shape, think texture: airy lace for romance, smooth satin or mikado for structure, sparkle for the spotlight. You don’t have to decide any of this in advance.

The best way to choose? Try them on.

Most brides are surprised by what looks best in person. Our designers — Allure, Madi Lane, Sophia Tolli, Morilee, Rosa Clará and more — span every silhouette here. See the collection, then book an appointment and we’ll pull a range so you can feel the difference.
