When Should You Start Shopping for Your Wedding Dress?

June 10, 2026 · 4 min

One of the first questions we hear at Bliss is, “How early is too early to shop for my dress?” The honest answer: it’s rarely too early — and it’s easier than you’d think to leave it too late.

The short version: start 9–12 months out

Most wedding gowns are made to order, not pulled off a rack. Once you say yes to the dress, the designer produces it in your size, which typically takes several months. After it arrives, you’ll want time for alterations and final fittings. Add it up and the sweet spot to order your gown is about 9–12 months before the wedding.

  • 12+ months out: ideal if you want a fully custom size or special details.
  • 9–10 months out: comfortable timing for a standard order plus alterations.
  • Under 6 months: still very doable — ask us about rush orders and off-the-rack options.

Why earlier is calmer

Shopping early means you’re choosing from the current collections, you’re not paying rush fees, and your alterations aren’t squeezed into the final weeks. It also frees you to enjoy the rest of your planning.

Short timeline? Don’t panic.

Brides find beautiful gowns on shorter timelines all the time. At Bliss we can talk through quick-ship designers and outlet options so you’re never stuck. The best first step is simply to come in.

Book your appointment and we’ll map a timeline around your date — or browse the collection first.
