Your Wedding Dress Alterations Timeline (What to Expect)

May 22, 2026 · 4 min

Even the perfect gown almost always needs alterations — that’s how it goes from “beautiful” to “made for you.” Here’s what the process looks like.

When to start

Plan to begin alterations roughly 2–3 months before the wedding. Starting too early risks changes in fit; too late leaves no margin for adjustments. If your weight or measurements are still changing, your seamstress will time fittings accordingly.

How many fittings?

  • First fitting: pin and plan — hem, bustle, bodice, straps.
  • Second fitting: check the major changes and refine.
  • Final fitting: confirm everything and learn your bustle. Bring your shoes and undergarments to every fitting.

Common alterations

Hemming, taking in or letting out the bodice, adding a bustle so you can dance, strap and sleeve adjustments, and lace or beadwork tweaks. More involved transformations are possible too — just give them time.

The Bliss advantage: it’s all in-house

Our seamstresses alter your gown right here, so there’s no shipping it out or finding an outside tailor. Learn more about alterations at Bliss, or book your appointment to get started.
